The Mission of Adoptionplus

Adoptionplus seeks to provide loving families for children who would otherwise have grown up in the care system. Many of the children we support have experienced significant abuse and trauma in their early lives. In providing loving families in which children can experience kind, supportive parents and a safe and stable family home, children have the opportunity to recover from painful early life experiences. Our specialist therapeutic services seek to support parents and children on the path to a more hopeful future.

Adoptionplus is a registered charity and employs a team of highly qualified and experienced therapists who are not only skilled professionals, but also warm and caring people, who families feel comfortable with.

We aim to provide our families with access to specialist therapeutic support throughout childhood, but to do this we need additional funding.

A bit more about Adoptionplus:

We employ a small team based in London and Buckinghamshire, who support children and families from across the UK. Despite being small, we are often described as punching well above our weight, as we seek to innovate and develop services and strategic solutions that are genuinely helpful. We have been involved in research with universities over a number of years, in our drive to contribute to learning and the improvement of services for children and families. We also write books in our own time, as we are passionate about sharing learning so that the widest number of children and families can benefit.

Adoptionplus:

  • Support 33 adopted children and their families with our unique Adoptionplus therapeutic support model
  • Have provided 972 additional children and their families across the UK with specialist trauma and attachment therapy
  • Have provided 1,087 therapeutic counselling sessions to birth parents and relatives who have lost children to adoption
  • Have been rated ‘Outstanding’ by OFSTED For 14 consecutive years since our inception
  • Have had 13 books published and staff have contributed to numerous international journal articles
  • Have provided 4,000+ caregivers, teachers and therapists with training through our specialist therapeutic training service
  • Have been contracted by 35 Local Authorities across the UK for our specialist services
  • Have been consulted by the Department of Education, the House of Lords, All Party Parliamentary Select Committees, NICE Committee for Quality Standards in Attachment, and the Japanese Government
  • Have built and piloted STEP, the first ever digital relational health measure for children with a trauma history
  • Have been commissioned by International Social Services Japan for the last two years, to provide therapeutic training to hundreds of social workers and baby home workers in Japan
  • Have been commissioned by Barnardo’s to undertake a therapeutic review of their residential care model in the UK.

Holding Hope consists of a group of business leaders who have set up a funding circle with the singular aim of meeting the shortfall in funding for the 33 adopted children and families supported by Adoptionplus.

Formed from seven like-minded founding SME member businesses / entrepreneurs, they believe that for-profit business can have a transformative impact on the charity sector.

Leveraging local, regional and international business networks, they are building a unique direct-action funding circle to provide fundraising and direct profit-sharing support to Adoptionplus to enable its critical work to continue.

Holding Hope believe that no child who has suffered trauma early in life should be prevented from the opportunity of having a safe and loving family. They are therefore committed to utilising their resources as businesses to hold hope for children and families who need help most, until they are ready to hold it for themselves.

Adoptionplus currently supports 33 adopted children and their families with multi-disciplinary therapeutic services until their adopted child is 18. This long-term service supports families to navigate the emotional and psychological challenges associated with adoption and past trauma, and works to ensure safe, loving, and supportive family environments.

This costs £5,000 per year for each adopted child.

Your support will enable us to provide these children and their families with the crucial therapeutic services they need.  Money raised from our external fundraising activities (in partnership with our Holding Hope funding circle) is ring-fenced and goes to providing therapeutic support to our 33 adopted children and their families.
