Theraplay
Theraplay is a lively, engaging, playful treatment method that produces remarkable changes in
the lives of children and their families in a short time. As its basis Theraplay aims to promote the
relationship between a child and his/her parents in a warm, nurturing and playful way. Parents are
central to the therapy and this model teaches them:
- how to help their child engage in a more loving relationship with their parents
- how to use challenge to build competence and self-esteem
- how to infuse all their interactions with the sheer fun of joyful play
- how to take charge without humiliating or hurting their children
- how to stay with them when they are angry or upset
- how to use appropriate touch as part of tender, nurturing care.
Family Attachment Narrative Therapy
This is a gentle, non-intrusive method that uses stories when working with families.
Stories can help the connection and empathy between parents and children, which can
provide a channel for healing and trauma.
Sensory Attachment Intervention
This is an occupational therapy intervention linked to a physical sensation. SAI focuses on developing a child’s capacity to manage stressful feelings. This innovative approach emerged from clinically integrating and adapting the theories of Sensory Integration, Attachment Classification and Symbolic Play.
Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (Dan Hughes model)
DDP is a treatment approach to trauma and loss. It is a family centred model, with the
child’s adoptive parents being actively involved.
DDP involves creating a safe setting in which children can begin to explore and
integrate a wide range of memories, emotions and experiences that are frightening
to them.
