What support families can expect from Adoptionplus
Once your child has been living with you for a few weeks we will offer you all 6 sessions of Theraplay. This is a play based therapy which promotes nurturing attachment relationships.
If your child is school age we will also offer to provide your child’s school with training and information about trauma, attachment, adoption and learning.
In addition to this your social worker will be available for you to obtain advice and guidance.
The Years Ahead
Adoptionplus believe that access to good adoption support services is vital to new families. Subsequently we have a team of therapists and consultants who have considerable understanding of the need of adopted children and their families.
As well as understanding about adoption, attachment and trauma issues, our therapists also have additional skills and qualifications. These include:-
- Play therapy
- Music therapy
- Art therapy
- Drama therapy
- Theraplay
- Integrative Dyadic Psychotherapy
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
- Occupational therapy
- Narrative attachment therapy
Adoptionplus families will have access to these services when their child or children have been placed with them.
These adoption support services are available for the first 3 years following your child coming to live with you, and possibly longer depending on the circumstances.
As well as social work support and therapeutic services, Adoptionplus also offer additional support services for adoptive families. These include:-
- Access to a telephone helpline
- Social events for families
- Social events for children
- Support groups
- Guides for children that explain about adoption and adoption support
- Books for children regarding adoption
- Training courses for adoptive parents that cover a variety of different issues relating to adoption, attachment and trauma
- Information and advice to Adopters key family and friends, in order that they understand how best to support you.
- Training for schools
- Access to consultation with a consultant clinical psychologist
